Discover the stories of Australian farmers working to realise their potential

Scroll To Discover

Every morning farmers across the country get up with the goal of getting the most out of the day ahead. Maximising their productivity is a key part of this, but even more important is the ongoing care of the land they work. Australian farmers are resourceful. They’re innovative. And they have the utmost respect for the land that provides for them and for us.

Incitec Pivot has been proudly partnering with Australian farmers for many years. It is a partnership that is built on trust and respect. It is also based on a shared belief in the importance of leaving the land in better shape than it is today for future generations.

There are interesting stories on every farm. Stories of farmers and their families working hard to realise their potential.

Dairy Cattle, Pasture

Nathan Bennett has been in the fresh milk game from the moment he left school. His grandmother started the family dairy farm back in 1965 and they’ve been milking ever since. They have a variety of soil types on their property, which means there is definitely no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Nathan believes that there is always scope to improve the soil, it just depends on what you are willing and able to put back into it. Good pasture is the key to milk production, so Nathan is always looking to give his a boost. Realising the potential of their business all starts with the pasture and that’s where Incitec Pivot comes into it.

IPF's Boosta range is designed to provide pastures with an extra 'boost' of nutrients for a rapid pasture response.

Every product in the Boosta range contains nitrogen and other essential nutrients for balanced pasture nutrition, particularly suited to high-performing pastures or to boost fodder yields in hay or silage crops.

I think it’s really important to leave the soil in a better state than when we started.

Angus Cattle, Cross-bred Ewes, Pasture

Jason Hall grew up in Tasmania, developing a passion for farming after spending his formative years helping out on his uncle’s farm. He now manages a property in central Victoria where they run cross-bred ewes and Angus cattle. Jason is a big believer that it all starts with the health of your soil. He is always keeping an eye on the nutrient levels in the soil to see if everything is where it should be. Jason sees the value in partnering with Incitec Pivot. He regularly tests the soil and then applies what’s needed to ensure they’re doing all they can to realise their full potential. He’s a big believer in leaving the soil in better shape for future generations and that’s exactly what he plans on doing.

EASY N enables you choose when, where and how to apply nitrogen for optimum efficiency, plant nutrition and farm productivity. It comes in a concentrated liquid form, allowing for precise, flexible application via whatever method suits your operation – and to suit all kinds of conditions.

EASY N’s combination of three different forms of nitrogen with different response profiles means your crop will get the nitrogen it needs, when it needs it, with less N loss to volatilisation.

Matt Cleave and his family farm in Lancefield in central Victoria. A third-generation farmer, Matt has a passion for all things agriculture. The biggest hurdles they encounter are the variability in weather and the acidic soil. They regularly use granular products to push plant growth in order to achieve the productivity gains required to improve their bottom line. Matt’s determination to pass the farm on to the next generation in better shape drives his focus on caring for the soil. He’s a believer that if you show the soil some TLC, it will look after you for years to come. Matt is incredibly optimistic about the future of agriculture in Australia, and when you speak with him, you cannot help but feel the same.

Kate Paterson’s family has been farming in central Victoria since the 1860s. During this time, they have seen their fair share of ups and downs, but one thing never changes, the more you put into farming, the more you get out of it. The same can be said for the sandy loam on their 4,000 acre property. Kate and her father, Donald, have no doubt that caring for the soil on their farm has been one of the keys to them sustaining their farming operation for so long. Over the years, Incitec Pivot has been there during times of need, always helping to provide solutions to problems as they arise. Kate is very excited about the potential of their property and is passionate about realising it.

Paul Baker runs a fourth-generation mixed farming operation in Howlong, NSW. Mainly producing cereal and summer crops, he’s always looking for ways to improve the soil and its structure to increase yields and productivity. At various times throughout the year Paul utilises a variety of different farming practices, including the application of fertilisers and deep ripping to unlock the soil’s potential. Sugar Cane

Nearly 20 years ago Peter Rose packed up his life in Bondi and purchased a sugar cane farm on the Lower Clarence River between Yamba and Maclean. Poor water drainage and salt can at times make it make it a difficult place to farm, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. Variations from one season to the next means he’s got to be adjusting his farming practices to suit the conditions. Managing the health of the soil is one of the primary ways Peter can influence his output each year and partnering with Incitec Pivot certainly makes this easier. Despite all the challenges, Peter doesn’t regret for one minute trading his corporate life for life on the farm.

Cal-Gran fertilisers were developed for a range of uses including ratoon cane in Queensland and northern New South Wales, along with horticultural crops and dairy pastures. It contains 23.9% nitrogen, with 16.5% in the ammonium form and 7.4% as nitrate, as well as 10.8% sulphur and 4.4% calcium.

Cal-Gran fertilisers contain less than 45% ammonium nitrate, above which concentration fertilisers are classified as security sensitive ammonium nitrate (SSAN).

Corn, Onions

Ed Windley and his wife produce sweetcorn and green beans in summer, carrots and onions in winter. Fifteen years ago, Ed returned to the family cattle farm and set about moving across into vegetable production. It was an ambitious plan, and not without its challenges along the way, but they now consistently produce the high-quality product that their customers demand. There are a lot of things beyond Ed’s control, but one thing he does have an influence on is the nutrients in his soil. The ability to apply customised nutrient blends plays a big part in Ed’s ability to care for the soil and work towards the realisation of its full potential.

Matt McVeigh, his two brothers and their parents run a farming operation near Dalby in southeast Queensland. Primarily a cotton farm, they also produce corn, chickpeas, wheat and barley. Matt considers the soil to be the backbone of every crop, with the care of it being the key to the long-term sustainability of their business. BIG N fertiliser fits into a wide range of modern farming practices, allowing farmers to work smarter, not harder.

Widely used in broadacre crops such as cotton, BIG N is applied as a gas or in liquid form using modified conventional application equipment. The high concentration of nitrogen ensures growers can cover more ground per tonne of fertiliser with BIG N, resulting in higher efficiency at application.

BIG N can be applied at almost all growth stages when nitrogen will be needed by the crop, such as before and at planting, as a side dress application or water-run in irrigated crops.
